Workshop at University of Alkafeel Addressing Violence and the Proliferation of Unlicensed Weapons
2024 - 09 - 30

Under the supervision of the Lifelong Learning Center at the University of Alkafeel, the College of Law organized a workshop: "Combating Violence and Promoting a Culture Against the Spread of Unlicensed Weapons" on Monday, September 30, 2024. The workshop was delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ali Aboud Al-Khafaji, dean of the College of Law, and was attended by several college deans, their assistants, and students.

The workshop addressed the issue of violenceand emphasized that violence, as a behavior or phenomenon, is not limited to a specific time or place, but has appeared and evolved across various civilizations and eras. He also reviewed the history of violence since the early days of human life.

In this context, the workshop shed light on the personal factors that contribute to violence, which are related to individual personality, as well as the influence of family, school, and society. Al-Khafaji highlighted the importance of rejecting violence, as stated in the Quran and the hadiths of the Prophet.

The second part of the workshop focused on the proliferation of unlicensed weapons. Dr.Al-Khafaji discussed the reasons behind this phenomenon and its consequences, along with ways to address it. Some of the reasons mentioned include insecurity and instability, as well as a cultural heritage that links weapon ownership with safety and personal dignity. He also pointed out the facilities of obtaining weapons due to weak government observation .

Al-Khafaji explained that the spread of unlicensed weapons poses a significant threat to political, economic, and social stability, as uncontrolled weapons create an atmosphere of fear and anxiety, hindering opportunities for comprehensive developmental progress.

The workshop concluded with several recommendations for addressing the proliferation of unlicensed weapons, most notably the need to enforce the law on everyone and implement United Nations agreements related to arms control. He also emphasized the importance of fostering a societal culture that encourages the rejection of violence through education and awareness programs, as well as the need to establish institutions for resolving tribal and community disputes without relying entirely on the state.
